Moved.
In case you were following this, I’ve moved the bits over to http://playswithfire.com/ - I’m not sure what I’ll do with this in the future. For right now, it’s parked.

Tumblr TOS makes me twitchy
I was having a good time with this thing (however sporadically) until I read Duncan’s post here. Now, I’m not so sure I’d post anything of my own work here. Time to dust off the real bits over at playswithfire.com…

Selectively Organized
Sitting here in my office at home I’m completely surrounded by paper - paper of all kinds: bills, mail, magazines, academic papers to read, all kinds of random stuff. I have a Fujitsu ScanSnap that I love, but somehow I don’t make the time to sit there and scan the important stuff. That’s probably because it’s such boring work. My office at work is totally organized. No...

In my house, programming...
…and I’m not at TED. :) Although given that I didn’t apply to go (and pay for the privilege at that), this shouldn’t be surprising.

Synergy. Or something.
I feel like I really should be figuring out how to embed my tumblr into my “regular” web page and then I’d be all set as far as the stuff I’d want to do with blogging, etc. It’s not lack of motivation. It’s lack of time. :)

MovableType or WordPress or... ?
I’m trying to decide about setting up a weblog (or just piping this one through someplace else) and I want to figure out what engine to use. Duncan uses MovableType after a brief flirtation with ExpressionEngine. Other people swear by WordPress. If I thought I was motivated enough, I’d try to set up typo. Any opinions?

Traveling tomorrow
We’re heading out tomorrow after work for a much-needed week long vacation. After taking the red-eye from SFO to JFK, we’ll eventually land in Syracuse, NY and after an hour and 40 minutes or so on the road and a short boat trip, we’ll wind up here. I usually leave my watch on the dresser, sit on the dock, and watch the river go by. If the sun is overhead and I’m hungry,...

Pool ready tomorrow
I’m very excited; the pool guy came by today to do the startup and said we could swim tomorrow. This rocks.

Lessons Learned from Hiring Pool Contractors
Get specific dates and penalties for the contractor not hitting their dates. Be clear about your landscape (“Don’t break the plants. Don’t dump out your water next to the house.” Stuff like that.). They will be late. Something will get broken. These probably apply to general contracting, but I haven’t done any of that yet.

...and that's a wrap
WWDC is over and it was a good show. The iPhone SDK has clearly attracted developers who have never worked on developing for the Mac. I had a brief heart-stopping moment when the demo machine didn’t come up on the projector during my talk. The technician had to come out and tinker with the switches and the configuration. He got it working and then the two demos I did went perfectly. It...

Preparing for WWDC
The big show is next week, and we’re all getting ready to give talks and answer tons of questions. The run-up to WWDC is always pretty stressful, but this year isn’t so bad. That’s partially because the show’s main focus is the iPhone. I’m still obsessing over the details of my talk, but that’s par for the course (and the same as all the other years I’ve...

Villa Montalvo and Sent Sovi
Today was the Villa Montalvo Food & Wine Classic. There were some fantastic restaurants and wineries there, including one of my favorites, Restaurant Sent Sovi in Saratoga, CA. All the dishes served up as samples were great. The wine was a bit more hit-or-miss this year. After the event, we were invited to celebrate with the staff of Sent Sovi and a number of other restaurants whose staff...

Cooking
I’ve been trying to do some more cooking lately, and one of the places I find recipes from is Cooking for 2 (which is appropriate because that’s usually how many I’m cooking for). The recipe for Quick Chick is a bit spicy out of the gate; if I were going to do it again, I’d probably put about 1/2 the cayenne than the recipe calls for. Of course, it has bacon in it, so...

WiiFit is surprisingly difficult, but fun
When Amazon sent me the pre-order email for the WiiFit, I thought about it for a second and then decided to go ahead and buy it early; if I didn’t I probably wouldn’t be able to get one after they came out. That was a good idea and it turns out I’m having a lot of fun with it even if some of the exercises are really difficult. Turns out I need a lot of work on the whole push-up...

Of course, right after that last post I discover this site.

Listening to the Pool Robot
…and watching the M*A*S*H marathon on TVLand. I definitely like the earlier episodes better, but anything with Sidney Freedman in it is pretty good.
